Billed as the largest festival in Hollywood dedicated to foreign film, the City of Lights, City of Angels (COL•COA) Festival will be bringing the best in contemporary French cinema from Paris to Los Angeles in what will be its 16th year.

Of note, 2 films you should be familiar with by now, given how much coverage they’ve received here on SA, will screen: the award-winning, box office record-setting Intouchables as well as the animated feature Zarafa - a beautiful hand-drawn work of animation about a 10-year-old named Maki and the orphaned giraffe, Zarafa, who go on an epic adventure from the Sudan, where Maki escapes from slave traders, to Alexandria, Marseille and Paris.

Of course both, and every film to be screened at COLCOA, are in French with English subtitles.

Screenings take place at the Directors Guild of America on Sunset from April 16th through the 23rd.

Individual tickets are $10 with special deals for seniors, students, the disabled and assorted guilds and film clubs.

Passes are also available and there are a number of free screenings.

Emmanuel profiled the animated feature Zarafa a few weeks ago, leading up to its Berlinale debut and opening in France; I’ve learned that it’ll also screen stateside – in NYC specifically, in March.

The 17th edition of Rendez-Vous with French Cinema, the Film Society of Lincoln Center here in NYC and Unifrance Films’ celebrated annual showcase of the best in contemporary French film, hits screens at The Film Society, the IFC Center and BAMcinématek, from March 1-11. More than two dozen New York premieres will be showcased during the series, including the aforementioned Zarafa as well as the award-winning sensation Intouchables, which I already alerted you to.

Directed by Rémi Bezançon and Jean-Christophe Lie, the 78 minute film is a beautiful hand-drawn work of animation about a 10-year-old named Maki and the orphaned giraffe, Zarafa, who go on an epic adventure from the Sudan, where Maki escapes from slave traders, to Alexandria, Marseille and Paris.

The family friendly film is in French with English subtitles.

It’ll screen thrice – on the 3rd, 4th and 11th of March, so opportunities there for you to take advantage New Yorkers.
